Watermelon Cocktail with Vodka: Melon State of Mind
This watermelon cocktail with vodka is fresh, bright, and ready to crash every backyard party you’ve got planned.

There’s nothing like that first juicy bite of watermelon at the start of summer…but you know what’s even better? Blending it up, straining it smooth, and then spiking it with vodka.
One weekend at the cabin, I took this watermelon cocktail to a whole new level. I found mini watermelons at Costco, hollowed them out, and served the cocktails inside. Add some fun straws from Amazon, and you’ve got a drink that’ll make your crew lose their minds.
Me and my gal pals grabbed our melons (the cocktail kind), a pitcher for refills, and headed down to the river like it was a mission. Billy Joel was playing, the sun was shining, and somewhere between the second and third round, we hit a full-on Melon State of Mind.
However you serve it — glass, watermelon, whatever — it’s guaranteed to please. And the best part? You only need a few simple ingredients to make it happen.
Watermelon Cocktail with Vodka Ingredients

- Watermelon: Cubed, blended, and strained.
- Vodka: Or whatever spirit you love. (I’m team Titos — smooth and easy.)
- Fresh Lime Juice: Always freshly squeezed.
- Simple Syrup: Make it yourself — it’s just sugar and water. Check out my Hibiscus Simple Syrup post, it walks you through it, just minus hibiscus.
- Mint: For that fresh garnish.
How to Make a Watermelon Cocktail with Vodka
Blend the Watermelon:
Toss your cubed watermelon into a blender and blend until smooth. Strain through a fine mesh sieve to catch any seeds and pulp.

Mix It Up:
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice halfway. Add watermelon juice, vodka, fresh lime juice, and simple syrup.

Shake It Like You Mean It:
Shake it up until everything’s icy cold and happy.
Pour and Garnish:
Strain into a glass filled with ice or — if you’re feeling extra — a mini watermelon. Garnish with fresh mint, a watermelon wedge, and a lime slice.
Sip and Celebrate:
Cheers to summer, watermelon, and your new signature party drink.

Variations: Make It Yours
- Make it a Mocktail: Skip the vodka and top off your watermelon juice with a splash of club soda or lemon-lime soda. Fresh, fizzy, and just as fun.
- Switch Up the Spirit: Not feeling vodka? Try white rum, tequila, or even gin for a whole new twist. (Cabin rule: use what you love.)
- Add Some Bubbles: Pour a little prosecco or sparkling wine over the top for a bubbly, boozier watermelon spritz.
- Turn it Slushy: Freeze your watermelon cubes first, then blend with your ingredients for a frozen party situation.
Leave out a cocktail shaker and ice, and your peeps can shake and pour to their hearts’ content.
Batch It Up and Make Ahead
Planning for a crowd? Save yourself the blender hustle and batch your watermelon cocktail with vodka ahead of time. Oh, and if you’re feeling super summer fresh, serve my summer salsa along with this batch.
Blend and strain your watermelon earlier in the day, mix up a big pitcher, and keep it chilled until it’s party time.
Instead of ounces, measure in cups, so…
- 4 cups watermelon juice
- 2 cups vodka
- 1 cup lime juice
- 1 cup simple syrup
How to Pick Out a Good Watermelon
Want the juiciest, sweetest watermelon for your cocktails or just a sweet summer bite? Here’s what to look for:
- Go for the golden spot. Look for a creamy yellow spot (the “field spot”) where the melon sat on the ground and ripened in the sun. Yellow = ripe.
- Give it a thump. Tap the watermelon — it should sound deep and hollow, like it’s full of juice.
- Check the weight. It should feel heavy for its size — that’s a good sign it’s packed with water (and flavor).
- Look for a dull finish. Shiny watermelons might look pretty, but a duller skin usually means it’s perfectly ripe.
FAQ: Watermelon Cocktail Questions Answered
First of all, my cocktail-loving friends… it might be time to add one to the wish list. (You’ll use it more than you think!) But if you’re blender-less at the moment, no worries. Just mash the watermelon really well with a potato masher or the back of a sturdy spoon, then strain out the juice. It won’t be quite as silky, but it’ll still be delicious.
Slice off both ends so it stands flat. Stand it up, cut it in half, then slice into strips one way and then the other to create a grid. Cut along the rind to pop out your cubes — no need to be fancy if you’re just blending!
Fresh mint is my go-to — it adds the perfect pop of color and a little refreshing vibe. You can also add a lime wedge, a watermelon slice, or even a fun straw.
Simple syrup is really, well… simple — just simmer equal parts sugar and water until the sugar melts away. Let it cool, and you’re good to go. Check out my hibiscus simple syrup post for more deets.
