There’s something about fresh strawberries and basil that feels like a little Lux. Maybe it’s the mix of sweet and herbal. Maybe it’s just an excuse to make a great cocktail. Either way, this strawberry basil cocktail is one you’ll want to keep on repeat.

Strawberry basil cocktail served in a cocktail glass, garnished with a skewered strawberry and fresh basil leaves. Surrounded by fresh strawberries, lemon halves, and additional basil leaves.

It’s fresh, light, and easy to throw together. Muddled strawberries and basil introduce bright, fresh flavors. Homemade strawberry simple syrup adds the perfect sweetness without overpowering the drink. A splash of lemon juice keeps things balanced, while vodka (or gin) gives it… well, ya know.

Topped with club soda, it’s crisp, fizzy, and dangerously easy to sip.

It reminds me of that first warm day when you declare patio season officially open. And what’s patio season without a cocktail in hand? No judgment here.

Let’s get to muddling this beauty…

Strawberry Basil Cocktail Ingredients

  • Sugar, Water & Strawberries: Simmered together to make the strawberry simple syrup. (For a detailed guide on making simple syrup, check out my hibiscus simple syrup post. Or, skip to the recipe card for the quick version.)
  • Fresh Strawberries and Basil: Muddled together to combine those wonderful sweet and herbal flavors.
  • Vodka or Gin: The base spirit that gives this cocktail its kick. Choose vodka for a clean taste or gin for a little botanical depth.
  • Fresh Lemon Juice: Brightens up the drink. Lime juice works well, too.
  • Club Soda (to top) – Adds a refreshing fizz and lightens everything up.

How to Make a Strawberry Basil Cocktail

Make the Strawberry Simple Syrup

In a small saucepan over medium heat, stir together water and sugar until the sugar dissolves. Add 4-5 halved strawberries and let it simmer for about 5 minutes, allowing the berries to break down. Remove from heat and let it steep for 20 minutes until the liquid turns syrupy and bright red. Strain out the solids and let the syrup cool before using.

Crafting the Strawberry Basil Cocktail

Muddle: In a shaker, smash the strawberries and basil 4 to 5 times to release their flavors.

Shake It Up: Add vodka (or gin), lemon juice, and syrup. Fill with ice and shake well for at least 10 seconds.

Pour & Top: Strain over ice, top with club soda, and sip away.

Garnish & Be Fancy: Add a basil leaf or a strawberry slice if you really want to impress your peeps.

The Berry Best Time to Shake This Up

Strawberries are at their peak in spring and early summer, making this the perfect warm-weather cocktail. That said, you can usually find fresh strawberries year-round at the grocery store. Just look for berries that are bright red, plump, and fragrant for the best flavor.

How to Muddle Like a Pro

Muddling helps release all the fresh flavors from the strawberries and basil. The trick is to press gently—don’t go overboard! Use a muddler (or the back of a spoon) to crush the ingredients just enough to bring out their juices without shredding them into bits.

Make Ahead & Batch It Up

Make the strawberry simple syrup ahead of time and store it in the fridge—it stays fresh for up to a month.

Got a crowd coming and don’t feel like muddling while your peeps are mingling? No problem. Multiply the ingredients, muddle, and mix everything (except the club soda) in a pitcher. Oh, and skip the ice—it’ll water down the fun. Keep it chilled until party time, then pour over ice and top each glass with club soda just before serving. Easy, fresh, and party-ready!

Perfect Occasions & What to Serve

This strawberry basil cocktail fits just about any warm-weather gathering, but it’s especially great for:

  • Mother’s Day Brunch – A fresh, elegant drink that pairs well with breakfast pastries and light bites.
  • Springtime Gatherings – The mix of bright flavors and fresh herbs makes it perfect for celebrating the season.
  • Summertime Happy Hours – Light, refreshing, and easy to sip on a warm evening.

And since you’ve got a cocktail this good, let’s make sure the food lives up to it. This drink is light, crisp, and just a little fancy, so it deserves a menu that plays along. No heavy, over-the-top dishes.

  • Leek & Goat Cheese Tart – Buttery, flaky, and just rich enough. The tangy goat cheese and delicate leeks love a bright, refreshing sip.
  • Salmon Sliders – Mini but mighty. The fresh, juicy salmon patties pair perfectly with the cocktail’s sweet and herbal notes.
  • Grilled Shrimp – Simple, smoky, and slightly charred. The shrimp’s natural sweetness and a strawberry basil cocktail? That’s a summer match right there.
  • Crab Cakes – Crispy on the outside, tender inside. A little aioli on top, and suddenly, this cocktail has its perfect sidekick.
  • Layered Zucchini Parmesan – Light, fresh, and full of flavor. The basil in the cocktail ties it all together, and let’s be honest—zucchini just makes us feel good about our choices.

So go ahead, mix up your drink, plate up something delicious, and soak up the moment. You’ve got this. I would love to hear about all the where’s, when’s, and how’s from you.
