This Spicy Blood Orange Margarita has everything you love in a classic margarita—tequila, lime, and that bright citrus snap —but with a jammy little attitude.

A few teaspoons of spicy blood orange jam shakes right in, giving this cocktail a touch of sweetness, a subtle kick of heat, and a beautiful red, orange hue.

When blood oranges are in season, squeeze a bit of fresh juice to boost the color and flavor. If you can’t find them, no worries, you have the citrus from the lime; it’s the spicy blood orange jam that makes the cocktail so different and wonderful. It takes the place of agave, adds natural sweetness, and delivers that perfect slow burn.

So here’s your friendly reminder, stock up on that jam ahead of time. Once you have it on hand, this cocktail comes together in minutes. It’s the perfect pour for your Halloween party, a fun way to spice things up before Thanksgiving, or even a fiery little twist for your Cinco de Mayo soirée.

Spicy Blood Orange Margarita Ingredients

  • Tequila – Go for the one you love. Silver tequila keeps it bright and smooth.
  • Orange liqueur – I always go with Cointreau. It’s a little pricier, but absolutely worth it. Triple sec will work in a pinch, but it just doesn’t have the same smooth citrus flavor.
  • Fresh lime juice – Always fresh. It’s what gives your margarita that crisp, tangy snap.
  • Blood Orange Habanero Jam – The real game changer. It takes the place of agave and adds that perfect mix of sweetness and spice. I found this gem on the FoodSocial Market and highly recommend grabbing a jar.
  • Blood orange juice (optional) – Adds that gorgeous sunset color and an extra layer of citrus flavor when blood oranges are in season.

How to make a spicy blood orange margarita

Start by running a lime wedge around the rim of your cocktail glass, then dip it in a little Tajín or chili salt for extra flair. (If you need a refresher, check out my winter martini post on rimming your cocktail glass.)

Add your tequila, Cointreau, lime juice, and two teaspoons of that Blood Orange Habanero Jam to a cocktail shaker. If you have fresh blood orange juice, squeeze a splash of that in too. Fill with ice and give it a good shake until it’s nice and cold.

Strain it into your glass over fresh ice, then garnish with a slice of blood orange or lime.

Ways to Mix It Up

  • Add some fizz – Top it with a splash of blood orange soda for a bubbly finish and an even deeper red hue. It’s as pretty as it is refreshing.
  • Go citrus-forward – If blood oranges are nowhere to be found, add a splash of fresh orange juice for a bright, juicy twist that still keeps things balanced.
  • Salt it your way – A black salt rim looks incredible against that fiery red-orange color. Or go classic with coarse sea salt and a tiny pinch of chili powder for an extra kick.
  • Turn up the heat – Add a thin slice of jalapeño to your shaker or float one on top for an extra pop of spice.
  • Make it frozen – Toss everything in a blender with a scoop of ice for a slushy version that’s perfect for summer or Cinco de Mayo.

Questions From the Bar

Can I make this spicy blood orange margarita ahead of time?

You sure can. Mix everything except the ice in a pitcher a few hours before guests arrive. Give it a good stir before pouring over ice when you’re ready to serve. The jam settles a bit, so just whisk or shake it up again.

Can I batch this up for a party?

Absolutely. Multiply the recipe by how many guests you’re expecting and stir it all together in a big pitcher or drink dispenser. For every 8–10 servings, plan on about 2 cups of tequila, 1 cup of Cointreau, 1 cup of lime juice, and about ½ cup of that spicy blood orange jam. It’s the easiest way to keep the fun flowing. Just don’t add ice until serving—it’ll water down all that jammy goodness.

What can I serve with this margarita?

This Spicy Blood Orange Margarita pairs beautifully with just about anything. Try it with my Grilled Shrimp for a light, summery match, or shake things up with a side of Summer Salsa . And if you’re going for that cozy cabin vibe, serve it alongside my Mahi Mahi Bites for an easy, crowd-pleasing pairing.

Can I make it less spicy?

Of course. Just use a little less jam or add an extra splash of citrus to mellow the heat. You’re in charge of the spice level here.

Can I turn this into a mocktail?

You bet. Skip the tequila and Cointreau, and add a little club soda or sparkling water. You’ll still get that jammy, citrusy goodness—just without the buzz.

When are blood oranges in season?

Blood oranges usually show up from December through April, depending on where you live. They’re a winter citrus, so when you see them, grab a few—they don’t stick around for long. You can juice them, slice them for garnish, or freeze a little juice to use in cocktails later.
