It’s the ultimate go-to for potlucks, backyard BBQs, or those nights when you just need something fresh and ridiculously satisfying on the table. And the homemade ranch dressing? Creamy, herby, and so much better than anything from a bottle.

Sure, there’s a little chopping, dicing, and prep involved, but trust me—it’s worth it when your peeps are gathered around, plates piled high, loving every bite. And because we all appreciate a good make-ahead moment, you can have most of it ready before the party even kicks off.

I love having this salad prepped and waiting after a long day on the river. You know the kind of afternoon—plenty of laughs, maybe a little too much sun, and a summer cocktail (or two) in hand.

Packed with hearty protein and garden-fresh veggies, all tossed in that dreamy homemade ranch, this Party Salad is everything you crave after a sun-soaked afternoon.

Alright, let’s get to the good stuff, starting with the ranch dressing that takes this salad straight to the next level.

Homemade Ranch Dressing

A creamy, herby dressing that’s rich, tangy, and completely irresistible. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Greek yogurt & mayonnaise – A balance of tangy and creamy. I always go full-fat for both Greek yogurt and mayo—better flavor, better texture. The yogurt stays creamy without that chalky aftertaste, and the mayo keeps the dressing rich and smooth. No watery ranch here!
  • White vinegar – Adds a bright, zippy kick.
  • Garlic cloves, pressed – Fresh garlic is key for bold flavor. I always use a garlic press to keep things smooth—no chunky bits of raw garlic in the dressing.
  • Worcestershire sauce – A little umami depth.
  • Dill, chives & parsley – Fresh herbs for that classic ranch taste.
  • Dried oregano & paprika – A touch of earthiness and warmth.
  • Dash of hot sauce – Just a little kick.
  • Kosher salt & pepper – Seasoning makes all the difference.
  • Buttermilk – Add gradually to reach your desired consistency.

How to Make Homemade Ranch Dressing

Chop the fresh herbs, then add all the ingredients to a large mixing bowl, except for the buttermilk. Whisk until fully incorporated. Add a little buttermilk at a time until you reach your desired consistency. Be sure to bottle that baby up and refrigerate until ready to use.

Party Salad Ingredients

All chopped, making for the perfect party salad packed bite.

  • Romaine lettuce – Perfect for adding crunch, structure, and a refreshing bite to the salad. Lettuce needs to hold up against the dressing, so I suggest using a crispy lettuce like romaine or iceberg. If you want to switch it up, butter lettuce or a mix of sturdy greens would work too.
  • Red cabbage – Adds to the crunch and brings a pop of color.
  • Diced turkey – I usually pick up pre-packaged turkey slices from Trader Joe’s, (in the refrigerated section) or ask the deli counter to slice your turkey real thick so you get a nice protein bite.
  • Cherry tomatoes – Less moisture than full-size tomatoes and a little more bite, making them perfect for this salad.
  • Chickpeas – Adds more texture and a subtle nuttiness to the salad.
  • Bacon, cooked and crumbled – Turkey bacon or pancetta work well too.
  • Hard-boiled eggs – Adds to the protein-packed goodness.
  • Avocado – Adds creaminess and a rich texture that balances the crunch.
  • White cheddar, cubed – Adds a sharp, creamy bite.
  • Scallions – They add a mild oniony bite without being overpowering. You can use red onion instead if you prefer a stronger flavor.

Let’s Get This Party Salad Started!

Cook the bacon and let it cool; do the same for the hard-boiled eggs. Rinse and drain the canned chickpeas. Next, chop all ingredients small for the perfect packed bite. In a large bowl, add romaine and cabbage, then top with all the other chopped proteins and veggies. Pour over the ranch dressing and mix everything together.

Party Salad, Your Way

The beauty of this chopped Party Salad is how flexible it is. For protein, add grilled chicken, shrimp, or other vegetarian proteins, such as edamame or tofu. Swap out veggies based on what’s in season. Toss in some dried fruit for a pop of sweetness. The options are endless.

Make-Ahead Party Salad Tips

Want to get ahead of the game? Simply chop all the ingredients and arrange them in a bowl, leaving the bacon to the side so it stays crispy. Pour the dressing when ready to serve. Once mixed, the salad will stay fresh for about a day before it starts to get soggy.

As for the ranch dressing, it’s good stored in the fridge for up to a week—so go ahead and make extra!

Cabin Tips

Crispy Bacon:
For perfectly crispy bacon, bake it! Lay strips on a foil-lined baking sheet and pop them into a 400°F oven for 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway. Let them drain on a paper towel for extra crunch. Bonus: No stovetop splatter!
Perfect Hard-Boiled Eggs:
Place eggs in a saucepan, cover with cold water, and bring to a boil. Once boiling, turn off the heat and let them sit for 10-12 minutes. Transfer to an ice bath for easy peeling. (No more stubborn shells!)
Diced Avocado:
Cut the avocado in half, remove the pit with a sharp knife, and gently score the flesh in a grid pattern. Scoop out the diced pieces with a spoon. Pro tip: Toss with a little lime or lemon juice to keep them from browning.

Build the Ultimate Backyard BBQ Menu

A great BBQ isn’t just about firing up the grill—it’s about a mix of flavors that keep everyone coming back for more. Here’s a lineup that hits all the right notes to accompany the party salad, from crisp bites to smoky mains and a cocktail that keeps the good vibes flowing.

  • Mahi Mahi Bites – Crisp, flavorful, and a perfect complement to the Party Salad.
  • Grilled Shrimp – Lightly charred and smoky, grilled shrimp bring a fresh and juicy bite that pairs perfectly with Party Salad.
  • Skirt Steak – Tender, flavorful, and easy to grill, skirt steak adds a hearty, savory element that rounds out the meal.
  • Strawberry Basil Cocktail – A refreshing drink—because what’s a backyard bash without a little liquid fun? (No judgments at the cabin)
