The holidays call for a little sparkle, and this Holiday Moscow Mule delivers. It’s everything we love about the classic cocktail (vodka, zesty ginger beer, that iconic copper mug) but with a merry splash of cranberry simple syrup and festive garnishes. Quick to shake up and even prettier to serve, this one deserves a spot at every holiday gathering.

For all my mule fans, let’s take a moment to appreciate why we can’t resist this classic concoction. First of all, it is super easy to whip up. Secondly, the combination of vodka (hello?!) and zesty ginger beer with a hint of citrus is like a burst of zippy refreshment. Lastly, can we talk about the copper mug experience? Sipping out of a shiny vessel that keeps your drink ice cold will undoubtedly elevate the vibe! Since we are on the topic of elevating…

Let me suggest this: have all that wonderfulness, but now add a hint of cranberry simple syrup’s sweet, tart flavor. This perfectly complements the ginger beer and adds a celebratory taste of the season. Then, throw in some fresh cranberries and a rosemary sprig, and your peeps will be feelin’ the love. So, let’s get to it…

Ingredients for a Holiday Moscow Mule

ngredients for a Holiday Moscow Mule. Cranberry simple syrup, vodka, lime juice, and ginger beer arranged on a wooden board.
  • Vodka – This is the cocktail’s base, so use your favorite kind. I have always preferred Tito’s because of its smooth and subtle flavor.
  • Ginger Beer—It is important to use a good-quality ginger beer for a mule because it can change the flavor profile of the whole cocktail. I like Fever Tree for its gingery kick and Goslings Ginger Beer for its carbonation.
  • Lime Juice – Always freshly squeezed, PLEASE!
  • Cranberry Simple Syrup—Making homemade cranberry syrup is simple and can be stored in the fridge for up to a month. Add 1 cup of water, 1 cup of sugar, and 1 cup of fresh or frozen cranberries to a pot and simmer. Please refer to my Hibiscus Simple Syrup post for more detailed instructions. You can also buy cranberry simple syrup on Amazon if you must. Cranberry juice also works; adjust it to your desired sweetness.

How to Make a Holiday Moscow Mule

So, do you have a minute? That’s all you need to whip up this delicious cocktail. Honestly, you’ll spend more time waiting for ice from the ice maker than actually making the mule. Let’s get to it…

Three Simple Steps

  1. First, fill your beautiful copper cup with ice and your cocktail shaker halfway with ice.
  2. Pour vodka, cranberry simple syrup, and freshly squeezed lime juice into the cocktail shaker and shake, shake, shake!
  3. Strain it into your mug, then fill it with ginger beer. Give it a stir, and Voilà —you have a wonderfully crafted cocktail! Don’t forget the festive garnishes!

Quick Note

Adding the vodka, syrup, and lime juice to a shaker is an optional step. I love how thoroughly the ingredients mix together, balancing the flavors. If you’re not in the mood to use a shaker, no worries! Just add the three ingredients directly to the mug, stir it, and then top it off with ginger beer.

Festive Garnishes

Fresh or frozen cranberries: Their bright color and seasonal significance make them the perfect topping for this holiday Moscow mule. I sometimes like to give them a frosted look. Simply add sugar to a zip-lock bag, place wet cranberries in the bag, and freeze the bag until ready to use for garnish. So fun!

Rosemary Sprig: It enhances the aroma and gives it such a festive flair, sticking out of the mug with its vibrant green leaves. I like to frost the rosemary sprigs like I frost the cranberries.

Lime Twist or Wedge: A classic and always refreshing touch.

Mint Leaves: The vibrant green leaves give the cocktail a refreshing scent and seasonal flair.

Sliced Ginger: Enhances the ginger flavor and aroma.

Variations

Getting creative with your cocktails is part of the fun! Experiment and customize the drink to suit your taste. Here are some variations to inspire your inner mixologist…

Change up the Spirits

  • Kentucky Mule: swap vodka for bourbon
  • Dark & Stormy: swap vodka for dark rum
  • Mexican Mule: Swap vodka for tequila
  • Irish Mule: swap vodka for Irish whiskey

Explore Flavor Pairings

  • Make it Spicy: Swap cranberry simple syrup for jalapeno simple syrup. I love using simple syrups; they add a subtle sweetness to the cocktail. Please refer to my Hibiscus simple syrup post for all my syrup variations. (All of which will work amazingly with this cocktail.)
  • Make it Tropical: Give it a tropical twist and swap out cranberry for pineapple juice or mango juice.
  • Autumn-Inspired: Swap out cranberry with apple cider and add a cinnamon stick for garnish for my autumn cocktail lovers.

Make it a mocktail

  • Swap vodka for club soda.

Holiday Moscow Mule FAQ

Can I make this Holiday Moscow Mule ahead of time?

Yes. Mix the vodka, cranberry simple syrup, and lime juice and store in a pitcher in the fridge until ready to serve. Pour in ginger beer right before serving to keep it fizzy.

How can I prepare a batch of this cocktail?

Measure out 1 cup of vodka, 1/4 cup of simple syrup, and 1/4 cup of lime juice, and mix them in a pitcher. Pour the mixture into the mug filled with ice, filling it halfway. Top it off with ginger beer and stir well. If you prefer a boozier mule (no judgments here!), fill the mixture almost to the top before adding the ginger beer.

Do I have to use a copper mug for this cocktail?

Tough question! The answer is no, but copper mugs somehow enhance the overall cocktail experience. Copper conducts temperature very well, so pouring a cold drink into the mug chills quickly. Plus, it just looks sexy in that mug. There are many great copper mugs available on Amazon.
