Light, citrusy, and with a smooth, green tea depth, the Matcha Mojito is the kind of cocktail that feels refreshing, a little fancy, and totally worth sipping.

Fresh mint and lime bring their signature refreshment, while matcha and mint simple syrup add a smooth, subtly sweet depth that takes this classic cocktail to a whole new level. It’s crisp, invigorating, and let’s be honest—kind of gorgeous with that vibrant green hue.

Inspired by my peeps, Karen and Ashley, I crafted up this cocktail to capture this duo of mine. Karen, my mint-growing queen, keeps me stocked with fresh leaves all summer—seriously, I’m never without mint. And then there’s Ashley, whose love for matcha borders on devotion. With her zesty personality, it only felt right to shake things up. So, with their influence (and my love for a good cocktail), the Matcha Mojito was crafted—fresh, bright, a little unexpected, and 100% sip-worthy.

Now, let’s talk about how you can mix this up for your next sip sesh—because your crew deserves a cocktail this good!

Matcha Mojito Ingredients

  • White Rum – You want to use a white rum (also called light or silver rum). Why? Because its clean, crisp profile won’t compete with the fresh mint, lime, and matcha. Dark or spiced rums, while delicious in other cocktails, would overpower the delicate balance of flavors here. Bacardi Superior is a go-to for mojitos for a reason. It’s clean, slightly floral, and widely available. A great choice if you’re keeping things simple.
  • Fresh mint leaves – Because no mojito is complete without that signature cool, herbal freshness.
  • Mint simple syrup (or plain simple syrup) – Sweetens things up while doubling down on the fresh mint flavor. Please refer to my Hibiscus Simple Syrup post for detailed simple syrup instructions, or see the recipe card for the short version.
  • Matcha Powder – Adds a rich, subtly sweet depth and a hint of natural energy. Whisk 1 teaspoon matcha powder with 8 ounces of water so it doesn’t clump up in your cocktail.
  • Fresh lime juice – Bright, tangy, and essential for that classic mojito zing.
  • Club Soda (or seltzer) – Lightens it up with a bubbly finish that makes every sip extra refreshing.

How to Make a Matcha Mojito

Muddle the Mint – In a sturdy glass, add 3-4 fresh mint sprigs and your mint simple syrup and lime juice. Gently muddle (more on that below!) to release the mint’s essential oils.

Mix the Matcha – In a separate glass, whisk 1 teaspoon of matcha powder with 8 ounces of water until smooth. A handheld, battery-operated whisk is a game-changer—especially if you love mixing things up as much as I do.

Add Ice & Build Your Cocktail – Fill the glass with ice; add rum and your matcha tea to the muddled mint and syrup.

Add Bubbles & Stir – Top it with club soda or seltzer and stir it.

Garnish & Serve – A sprig of mint, a lime wheel, and maybe even a dusting of matcha on top?

What’s the Deal with Matcha?

Matcha isn’t just for lattes—its smooth, slightly earthy flavor and natural boost of caffeine make it a perfect addition to cocktails. It adds just the right depth to balance the bright citrus and fresh mint, giving this mojito a little something extra.

There are two types of matcha—culinary and ceremonial—and choosing the right one makes all the difference. Culinary matcha has a stronger, slightly bitter flavor, making it great for baking and lattes but a little too bold for cocktails. Ceremonial matcha, on the other hand, is smoother, naturally sweeter, and blends seamlessly into drinks without overpowering the other ingredients. For this Matcha Mojito, ceremonial matcha is the way to go—it keeps the flavors fresh, bright, and perfectly balanced with the mint and lime.

The key to using matcha in cocktails? Always whisk it first! This prevents clumps and ensures it blends smoothly into your drink.

Muddle Like You Mean It (But Not Too Much)

Muddling might sound fancy, but it’s just a way of gently pressing mint leaves to release their oils. Here’s the secret: go easy! Five to six muddles. Over-muddling can make your drink taste bitter, and no one wants a mojito that bites back. A few gentle presses with a muddler (or the back of a wooden spoon) will do the trick. So, don’t overdo it, kay?

Make-Ahead & Batch It Up

Hosting a Cinco de Mayo fiesta or just having friends over? Skip the single servings and multiply the ingredients by the number of peeps you’re serving.

Make ahead, but not too far ahead! Muddle the mint with lime juice and simple syrup, then mix in the matcha and rum. Store in the fridge for up to 2 hours—any longer, and the mint might start looking a little sad. When it’s time to serve, pour over ice, top with club soda, and garnish with fresh mint and lime. Fresh, fizzy, and fiesta-ready!
