Dangerously Delicious Vodka Basil Smash
The abundance of fresh, fragrant basil in the summer inspires me to put it in just about everything. Why not a cocktail? You will go crazy insane in the membrane for this super easy, dangerously delicious Vodka Basil Smash.

This summer cocktail combines the sweet, tart flavor of grapefruit juice, the herbal essence of basil, citrusy lime, and Vodka! I added a splash of elderberry liqueur to the muddled basil to add a smooth, floral note. Put these simple ingredients together, and you have crafted one damn delicious cocktail.
It’s one of my favorite go-to summer cocktails. The boozy spirit is perfect for any summertime gathering, whether it’s a poolside shindig or an intimate, warm, breezy patio sipping party for two. It’s effortless and easy, just like my other summer favorites, the Vodka Hibiscus Cocktail and my Strawberry Basil Cocktail.

Vodka Basil Smash Ingredients
Five simple ingredients…

- Vodka – use preferred vodka. I love Tito’s – subtle and clean.
- Grapefruit Juice—Store-bought grapefruit juice works great in this cocktail, but if you’re up to it, use freshly squeezed grapefruit juice; just be sure to strain the pulp.
- Basil – fresh basil is muddled to extract the aromatics of the herb.
- Elderflower liqueur – an optional ingredient, but adds a wonderful floral note to the cocktail.
- Lime Juice – fresh lime juice is always preferred, but 1 tablespoon of bottled lime juice can be substituted.
How to Make a Vodka Basil Smash
The easiest cocktail to make for your next backyard bash. It’s a party in a glass.
First, put a handful of fresh basil in your cocktail shaker.

Next, squeeze the lime juice into the shaker, splash some of that Elderflower Liqueur on the basil, and start muddling. I’m calling the cocktail a smash; not to be confusing, but I don’t want you to smash the heck out of the basil. Let’s gently mash.
Add ice before adding the vodka and grapefruit juice, and shake, shake, shake. Who doesn’t love a froth?
Strain the liquids into a beautiful cocktail glass with ice, or make it martini-like and skip the ice. Top with fresh basil and a grapefruit slice. Finally, let’s sip.

Substitutions/Variations
- Not a fan of vodka? We can still be friends. Gin, white rum, or tequila also work well with these flavors.
- If you want to make the cocktail bubbly, top the strained liquids with some soda water.
- Do you need to make it a mocktail? Omit the vodka and substitute soda water.
Vodka Basil Smash for a Crowd
If you want to make this cocktail for your army of peeps, it’s really easy. Simply multiply the ingredients by the number of cocktails you want to make and put them in a pitcher. Don’t add the ice, or it dilutes the drink—we certainly don’t want that! Leave some freshly picked basil out for garnish and fragrance. Also, I like to keep the cocktail shaker by the pitcher for those who like that frothy top.
Make ahead if you don’t want to mix by the bar when your company arrives. Don’t strain until right before serving; this will make it really stand out in the cocktail.
Give it a fun signature name for your next gathering. I do love the “smash” in the name. Just sounds fun, doesn’t it? It makes for a memorable cocktail for your next…
