Ingredients for an Ahi Tuna Appetizer

- Fresh Ahi Tuna – vibrant in color and mild in flavor. When buying, be sure it’s firm in texture and odorless. Please buy from a reputable market.
- Sesame Oil – adding a sweet, nutty profile. Often used in Asian dishes.
- Soy Sauce – I prefer to use low-sodium soy sauce instead of full-sodium soy sauce because you don’t want the saltiness to overpower the delicate flavor of the tuna.
- Shallot—finely minced. Offers a mild sweetness with a subtle hint of garlic-like aroma and hints of onion.
- Ginger – freshly grated creates a more complex flavor than ground ginger, but in a pinch, you can use ground ginger.
- Lime Juice – freshly squeezed PLEASE!
- Sriracha – adds a little kick to the marinade. It is thicker than hot sauce, making the marinade a bit thicker for the tuna.
- Parsley– adds a clean, peppery taste.
- Cilantro – add a fresh, citrusy flavor profile.
Avocado Mash

- Avocados – skin removed and pitted.
- Red onion – finely minced. Red onion gives a bit of garlic flavor.
- Cilantro – add the freshness to the mash.
- Lime Juice – always freshly squeezed!
- Salt and Pepper – to taste.
How to make an Ahi Tuna Appetizer
First things first, let’s mix the beautiful flavors of the marinade. Add the sesame oil, soy sauce, minced shallot, grated ginger, freshly squeezed lime juice, sriracha, chopped parsley, and chopped cilantro to a mixing bowl. And “Whip it! Whip it Good!” Set aside.

Dice the tuna into small cubes with a sharp knife. Next up is the avocado mash. While working on the avocado mash, you can put the diced tuna in a seal-tight container and refrigerate until ready to assemble.

Now, let’s work on the mash part. Using a sharp knife carefully slice the avocado in half all around the pit. Hold the avocado with both hands and gently twist to separate the halves. To remove the pit firmly tap the knife’s blade into the pit until it sticks. Gently twist the knife to release the pit from the flesh. Spoon out the flesh from the skin.
Once both avocados are pitted and peeled, add to a mixing bowl with chopped cilantro, freshly squeezed lime juice, and minced red onion. Add salt and pepper to taste. Mashed ingredients together with the back of a fork until desired Mash-ness.

Time to assemble the deliciousness! Pour the marinade over the diced fresh ahi tuna. Gently mix until all the tuna has incorporated the marinade.

The Presentation: Here’s where the magic unfolds. Grab your fanciest plate because presentation matters, my darlings! Place a stainless steel round cookie cutter onto the plate and spoon avocado mash halfway into the round. Gently press the mass into the mold. Next, mound the tuna on top. Gently remove the round, and it’s your “YES CHEF” moment!
